May is well known for the Kentucky Derby, and the Kentucky Derby calls for at least one mint julep. Here in wine country, we replace the bourbon in the mint julep with Chardonnay. This cocktail is just as refreshing as it is unique and perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day.

INGREDIENTS

4 ounces Sonoma-Cutrer Coast Chardonnay

1 ounce sweet vermouth

1 ounce Madeira wine

2 drops pure vanilla extract

1 ounce brown sugar simple syrup

1 dash Angostura Bitters

fresh mint to garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Combine all but the mint in a cocktail shaker with a generous amount of ice. Stir, don’t shake. No Julep glass here, we prefer wine glasses! Fill halfway with crushed ice and strain cocktail into the glass. Garnish with mint. Enjoy responsibly.

  2. Brown sugar simple syrup: Combine 1 tablespoon brown sugar and 1 tablespoon water and heat until fully incorporated. Allow to cool.
