Wine made in amphora often exhibits earthy minerality, complex aromas of herbs and spices, and pure, fruit-forward flavors unaltered by oak aging. This ancient method embraces minimal intervention techniques and seeks a deeper connection to tradition and terroir.
This wine is a pale straw color with inviting aromas of Asian pear, melon, soft citrus and wet stone. The palate reveals vibrant flavors of white nectarine, bright citrus and orange blossom, complemented by subtle notes of wildflower honey. With bright acidity and a creamy mid-palate, it is beautifully balanced, leading to a juicy, lingering finish that highlights its elegant structure and mineral undertones.

The 2023 harvest for Sonoma-Cutrer, starting later than usual, and benefited from record winter rains that revitalized the soils and promoted healthy vine growth. Cooler spring and summer temperatures allowed for gradual grape development and extended ripening, ensuring optimal maturity. As October brought warm, dry weather, the grapes reached perfect ripeness. This combination of ample water, cool growing conditions, and a warm finish resulted in a 2023 vintage with exceptional balance, complexity and depth of flavor.
Each vintage, a portion of our Chardonnay is set aside and gently aged in terracotta clay amphoras. This unique vessel respects the fruit and imparts mineral nuances that enhance the wine’s structure and earthy complexity. This wine was crafted using fruit from the H south and B North blocks of Les Pierres Vineyard, chosen for its vibrant acidity and bright lemon-lime flavors at harvest – perfect for amphora aging. We currently have just four small amphoras, each holding approximately 70 gallons, making this an exceptionally limited release.
